Brass Quintet

From Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University. Each quintet member has extraordinary performance experience. It will be an evening to revel in the brilliant and bold sound of brass. Their performance promises to be a lively program and perfect ending to our 2017/18 season.

Comprised of Youngstown State University brass faculty members, Dana Brass Quintet members include Stacie Mickens, horn, Christopher Krummel, trumpet, Nicholas Samson, trumpet, Hakeem Bilal, bass trombone, and Brian Kiser, tuba. Each member has extraordinary performance experience. The quintet has performed numerous recitals and youth outreach concerts throughout each year.

Stacie Mickens
currently serves as principal horn for both the Wheeling and Youngstown Symphony Orchestras, as well as fourth horn for the Akron Symphony. In addition to her orchestral performance experience, Dr. Mickens has performed in numerous drum and bugle corps activities, including the Star of Indiana’s Brass Theater, the Cadets of Bergen County, and the Colts.

Along with holding positions with numerous orchestras in Ohio and all over the world, Christopher Krummel is also an active military duty musician, a solo musician, and a commercial musician. Some of his experience includes performing with Michael Bolton, The Temptations, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, to name a few.

Nicholas Samson
is in his final semester of graduate studies at Youngstown State University and holds positions with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra (PA) and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. As a member of the Youngstown Saxon Band, he has performed throughout Europe. As a commercial musician, he has performed with entertainers such as O’Jays, The Tokens, Peter Tork, Martha Reeves, Sam Moore, and Jay Harmon.

Hakeem Bilal
holds positions in numerous ensembles including C Street Brass, River City Brass, and Beauty Slap. He regularly substitutes for the Cleveland Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony. He has recently returned from a stint performing with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Bilal currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA.

After receiving his doctorate from prestigious Jacobs School of Music, Brian Kiser currently holds the position of Principal Tuba of the Roanoke Symphony (VA), and has performed in numerous other ensembles including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Youngstown Symphony, Canton Symphony, Warren Philharmonic, New Mexico Philharmonic, and the Malaysian Philharmonic (Kuala Lumpur) Orchestras. Additionally, Dr. Kiser holds the position of Solo Tubist with the Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band.

The program is sure to impress including works by G. F. Handel, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Camille Saint-Saëns. Other arrangements include a piece by J.S. Bach, Johann Strauss, and even Billy Joel, to name a few! The remarkable musicianship and bold brass sound will be the perfect ending to Music from The Western Reserve’s 35th season.

The concert will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 8 at Christ Church Episcopal located at 21 Aurora Street, in the heart of downtown Hudson. There will be a meet-the-artist reception immediately following the concert. This evening’s performance is graciously sponsored by Laurel Lake Retirement Community.
